The outcome is a binary one-or-the-other, and you don’t care about societal benefits or harm reduction so you can signal your virtue about it online, THAT’S on you. Everything is an Is/Ought problem, isn’t it?

Looking back it’s sad to recognize the foundation was always there (reflexively contrarian, transgressive, eager to punch down on socially unpopular groups) and they just needed a few prods to go all in (MeToo, the backlash to Sam Harris defending Charles Murray, to name a few).

The Chernow biography is fascinating. An otherwise unremarkable failson who is a remarkable general and raised with acute moral clarity who was one of the peak “right person, right place, and right time” people in human history and is wholly admirable because of it.
