A big thing I got from Antony Beevor’s Fall of Berlin book was how he took the time to point out that germans who had been in the eastern front knew that the soviets were out for revenge, and that the writing was on the wall of what was going to happen to them.

The concept is just so intuitive (because different hierarchies can be assymetrical and not map onto each other 1:1, a person’s experience in them depends on how one’s identity in each hierarchy INTERSECTS), that I really can’t see the mental gymnastics necessary to see it as something else.
