Takarakuji (宝くじ) translates to mean ‘fortune lottery’ or ‘treasure lottery’. The Takarakuji lottery dates back to 1945, when the Japanese government established a state lottery. The prizes included cash, valuable items, houses and cars. The artwork is uncredited but this illustration bears a striking resemblance to the cover of ‘The Happy Owls’, a 1963 children’s book by Swiss graphic artist Celestino Piatti.

recently watched Hiroyasu Ishida’s 'Drifting Home' (2022) - a measured & emotionally resonant coming-of-age #anime exploring friendship, grief, petty grudges, nostalgia & the weight of past events that hold one back - meticulous world-building & characterisation... plus some monumental metaphor
