Two weeks into living in Ilsabard, she started to smell the oil. The old train terminal was thick with the grease leaking from the corpses of decrepit machinery. Clove oil, like the kind she used on her own weapons, was liberally applied to swords and armor to fight the powder snow that was ever pervasive outside and and even worse in the station once it melted into slush. In front of her, Jullus dabbed a thin, odorless liquid onto a small cloth and ran it along the disassembled interior of his firearm. Oil on skin, cooking oil, accelerants. It was a new sensation, the ability to smell, and Zero didn't know whether to cover her nose or breathe it all in like it was the last of her humanity

I always viewed Erenville as someone who is an incredibly emotionally closed off character. As such, he rarely, if at all, opens up — even to those closest to him. While I think he learns to be better about it in the long run, he still finds solace when on his own.

There are so many pieces of this that I want to pull-quote, but this in particular is so important. Transformative fandom spaces are not without their own ugly biases, but the stories that get "uplifted" into tradpub books only serve to reinforce whose stories are already seen as worthy of telling.
Feed fanfic into capitalism, and it comes out shaped like capitalism. The job of agents and editors is to find authors whose books will be successful, which means finding ways to cash on social media trends—like the BookTok popularity of Dramione and Reylo. And those trends aren’t neutral. The TikTok algorithm that produced them is racially biased, suppressing content from Black and queer creators. At the level of the basic mechanics of the platform, virality accrues first and most to white tastemakers and their interests. The publishing industry, whose gatekeepers are overwhelmingly white, has racism problems of its own. The issues of racism, sexism, ableism, and heterosexism compound.
