I guess I don't understand how any of that is ruinous.

I used to be really stingy with film because of the cost. It's so nice to be able to fire off a couple dozen shots to get the picture you want without any worry.

Aw man I hear that. I really enjoyed hand-developing pictures in high school but that was the last time I had access to a darkroom. And I remember the anticipation of picking up a roll of film after I got it developed, but digital is really preferable overall.

If you don't believe what the Church teaches excommunication doesn't necessarily mean all that much.

If you do believe what the Church teaches it's tantamount to consigning someone to perdition.

This is a good thread about what it means for Sandy Hook to have marked the end of the US gun control debate:
As a "gun guy" for most of my life and understanding the industry, the lobbyists, and intimate familiarity with Gun Culture™ in the US, this quote is 100% accurate and a bit of a gut punch once I thought about it through the insider lens I see that most don't have. Might be a long thread on this...
"In retrospect, Sandy Hook marked the end of the U.S. gun control debate,” British columnist Dan Hodges wrote in 2015. “Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over.”

If anything can break through that it's this

But I'm also very concerned that even this won't break through

like this could be the Sandy Hook of Trumpism

Yes, exactly that. I remember thinking when he first got elected in 2016 that a lot of his base would come to regret voting for him. I was, among other things, underestimating how thoroughly our siloed media ecosystems disrupt the possibility of consensus reality

My partner has bought me e.g. the Kraft Star Trek V marshmallow dispenser or the TV guide with Xena and Seven of Nine on the cover for special occasions because they *know* me.

It doesn't approach what he deserves but everyone who spits upon his name diminishes his power just by that much.

It's somewhat less mainstream than it was in the 90s / early 2000s but didn't they do this to Millie Bobby Brown too?
