Never had she tasted such marvelous things. Alternating between sage-crusted bread, apple cinnamon pie with fresh cream, dandelion salad, cheese and mushroom flan, iced cakes, and honey-glazed preserved fruits, she held her own with the best trencherbeasts.

Around the south wall was a scene of merry chaos. Tummscoff came to meet them, a beaker of plum cordial in one paw and a half-eaten wild oat scone, dripping honey, in the other.

On the blossom-scented air of soft summer eventide, the tables were laid with clean linen, garlanded by flowers and greenery. Servers stood by bearing jugs of damson cider, rose-petal and plum-flower tea, cowslip cordial, and the good October Ale for which the Abbey was famed.
