Happy New Year! These are my picks for the ‘Best Movies of 2025’. #filmsky
HOW TO MAKE A KILLING: This retelling of 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' from filmmaker John Patton Ford has style and charisma, but ultimately lacks momentum. Glen Powell may carry some magnetism, but the moral reckoning narrative doesn't offer enough satire to distinguish itself from others. #filmsky

CRIME 101: A solid crime thriller that pays homage to the early works of Michael Mann. The action's slick and nicely stylized in its cinematography & editing. However, its overstuffed narrative and overlong 2 1/2 hour runtime hurt its significance. Still an effective watch overall. #filmsky

GOAT: The latest from Sony Animation is a traditional underdog, or should I say "under-goat", sports movie mostly saved by its vibrant, dazzling animation and incredible world-building. The overall characters and humor are a mixed bag, but contains enough heart & soul to win families over. #filmsky

TIME AND WATER: The latest documentary from Sara Dosa showcases a video time capsule that also acts as a catalyst for the rapid disappearance of glaciers in Iceland, all told from writer Andri Snær Magnason & his home movies. Engrossing and alarming, yet more of a slow-burn. #filmsky

CHASING SUMMER: This midlife crisis/coming of age comedy about an early-40s woman heading back to her hometown to amend past mistakes is aggressively mediocre. Iliza Shlesinger (who also wrote it) tries her best to blend heart and humor. It's sweet and sentimentality felt very perfunctory. #filmsky

JOSEPHINE: Beth de Araújo's film captures a gripping, devastating drama about an 8-year-old girl witnessing a brutal assault & the effects it leaves on her. Mason Reeves gives a magnificent child performance alongside Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan. Thought-provoking, yet not an easy watch. #filmsky
#NowWatching (via Sundance): JOSEPHINE (d. Beth de Araújo), this year’s Grand Jury Prize & Audience Award winner.

HA-CHAN, SHAKE YOUR BOOTY!: Rinko Kikuchi is phenomenal in this rom-com/drama from Josef Kubota Wladyka. It's proficient in its direction and choreography, but its bizarre tonal balance of coercive grief and heartwarming sentimentality ultimately left me feeling a little cold by the end. #filmsky

zi: Kogonada's micro-budget experimental drama with a soft sci-fi twist conveys the sense of time & belonging. Michelle Mao, Haley Lu Richardson & Jin Ha are all wonderful with suitable cinematography by DP Ben Loeb. It could've been more coherent, but its otherworldly vibes were enticing. #filmsky

PETER HUJAR'S DAY: An experimental two-hander accounting writer Linda Rosenkrantz's 1974 interview with the titular photographer. Ben Whishaw's remarkable & it looks exquisite. But it's pretty mundane that the dialogue's not as enticing. Even at 76 minutes, it's an extremely arthousey film. #filmsky

THE GOLDEN SPURTLE: This documentary about the World Porridge Competition in Scotland is an utterly joyful delight. Visually beautiful & capturing a quaint little community with larger-than-life characters, it's a unique, heartwarming gem to be discovered. Hope it gets US distribution soon. #filmsky
