The struggle over regime change is about whether the aspiring authoritarians can subdue civil society. Their strategy is to play divide and conquer, rewarding friends and brutally punishing opponents. They win when society cracks, creating a self-enforcing set of expectations, in which everyone shuts up and complies because everyone expects everyone else to shut up and comply, too.

without the illusion of the normative state, the justices’ are revealed to be pawns, not power brokers. Their authority would evaporate because it is based on the perception of the rule of law. But maintaining a stable dual state means that the prerogative state must hold itself back, particularly in when it comes to the economy

Yes, but THAT questioning could have "ruined his life" by costing him a "deserved" position as one of the country's most powerful people, relegating him to a slightly less powerful job.

The people he's writing about just risk jail or deportation: no big deal when it happens to little people.

The economics of appealing to the middle class aren’t what they used to be. The market, and increasingly the culture, is dominated by the affluent. And technology is enabling companies to see these previously invisible class divides and act on them. Based on what we earn, we see different ads, stand in different lines, eat different food, stay in different hotels, watch the parade from different sections, and on and on. What’s profitable today is not unification. It’s segmentation.

This characterisation is very unfair to Politico, whose writers plumbed the depths of self-parody with this story, which claims the shooting is "quickly becoming a problem for Mamdani" based solely on hypotheticals from Dem advisors, and quotes from political foes who already hated him.

From the headline, I expected to read about gay people attacking straight bars, burning books and movies that advance a hetero agenda, or some other thing we associate with 'radicalized' groups. Turns out they just keep adding extra letters.

The words “gay” and “lesbian” all but disappeared. L.G.B.T. became L.G.B.T.Q., then L.G.B.T.Q.+, and more letters and characters kept being added: L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ or 2S.L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ (to include intersex, asexual people and two-spirit Indigenous people). The plus sign referred to a seemingly infinite number of new niche identities, and, by some counts, more than 70 new “genders.”

In the video, a person walks up to the back of the Dodge Charger and appears to take a photo of the license plate. That’s when the driver gets out of the vehicle and points a gun at the person who was behind the vehicle, then toward another person outside of the video frame. The word “Police” is visible on the driver’s vest, along with a badge on his hip. After a few seconds, the man puts the gun away and gets back into the car as bystanders shout at him. The man then activates the vehicle’s red and blue lights common to law enforcement vehicles and drives away.

The White House has officially canceled the First Amendment and declared public protest a form of treason.

One way I’ve been thinking about this is in terms of a phrase that is traditionally applied to the left: counterculture. I think the best way to understand politics right now is that the United States, for the first time in my lifetime, has a real right-wing counterculture — an edgy, radical-seeming alternative to the status quo.
