It's a weird time for the Midwest. It feels like a perpetual midnight, like you're in the world's dullest sleepover.

The other congregants waited in their cars, likely covertly listening to the radio, or—if they were really feeling spicy—a CD. An array of old sedans and beat-up pick-ups chugged in the tattered parking lot, spewing exhaust as the occupants warmed themselves on their heaters and hid their worldly music. Miryam snorted to herself as she kicked a rock back into its rightful place in the landscaping. It figured. Spend all morning doing the very thing you're convinced is leading the world to sin.

Text snip: David exhaled a thick cloud of smoke, and with it, his problems. This is exactly what I needed, he thought, pulling in another indulgent lungful, then blowing into the masonry at his shoulder. A shower, a smoke, and his favorite pair of jeans, shucking off his de facto office uniform and relaxing into something that didn't beg for a pair of shoes that needed a weekly polishing. He crushed the tip of his butt behind him, and dropped it into the pile of cigarillo wrappers and plastic tips at his feet.

Text snippet: He heard the gasping breaths, but they failed to quell his burning need and he flailed desperately for air. His hands came in contact with something and he felt the steely cooler pressed around his arms and caving in close around his body. He clawed at the sensation, fighting to free himself from this prison and wanting to scream "I'm alive in here", but the coldness warmed to brush a soft textile against his skin, and he realized this feeling might be familiar.

"Oh absolutely, Mr. McCormick," she murmured, clearly absorbed, before snapping her head up. "Right! Um, well done." She patted his arm. "Glad I got something right." He gave her a weak, embarrassed smile. "Don't be too hard on yourself," she said, guiding him by the elbow toward the gate. "To your credit, I did say we'd have to sneak. I suppose I should have been clearer just how much sneaking would be involved." "Th—thank you, uh, ma'am," he said, blushing. He should have figured, but it was nice for her to say, anyway.
