Over the last century, there have been a slew of destructive tsunamis that originated in Alaska, he said. "Statistically, the next large tsunami that hits the West Coast is likely to come from Alaska," West said. While most of the Alaska Earthquake Center's seismic stations are funded by the U.S. Geological Survey, NOAA chose the locations and funds the operations of around nine stations, he said. These stations will go dark in November, following the path of a few other NOAA stations that were decommissioned after budget cuts in 2013. Getting data from Alaska seismic stations is difficult because of the region's ruggedness and remoteness. When engineers are sent to check up on seismic stations, it can take a week or two before the weather is clear enough for a flight back, he said. Data from remote stations is often sent through satellites, telephone lines, fiber optic cables and radio signals. While there is an honest debate to be had about how much data is too much and where, West said that was not the approach NOAA took when declining to renew the contract. West said he was told over email on Sept. 30 that the contract, which would have begun on Oct. 1, was not being renewed. West said he believes that in the current political climate and amid funding chaos, it's likely the $300,000 allocated to the Alaska Earthquake Center just got cut.

Voters should consider submitting their ballots at a drop box location instead. Under a proposed rule change from the U.S. Postal Service, the agency clarified that ballots mailed at the last minute might not be postmarked on the day they are received. Only ballots postmarked on Election Day or before can be counted under Washington's vote-by-mail rules. The Postal Service is proposing to add language that the "postmark date does not inherently or necessarily align with the date on which the Postal Service first accepted possession of a mail piece." USPS has also stopped counting Saturday as a transit day, has reduced afternoon pickups, and slowed some first-class mail delivery standards.

"I called up the Koreans, I said, oh, give me a break. Get the right visa and if you're having problems getting the right visa, call me. I'll call Kristi Noem," he said, referring to the Homeland Security secretary. "We'll help you get the right visa, but don't do it the wrong way," "You can't do things the old way. Donald Trump requires you to do it correctly. You want to immigrate, you want to bring workers here, go through the right process. You can't skirt the rules anymore. That is over." Reality check: The right visa, as Lutnick puts it, is hard to come by. The H-1B visa for specialized foreign workers, for example, has hundreds of thousands more applicants than available slots, meaning demand far outstrips supply. It's also not entirely clear how a company could call up the Commerce secretary and get the right visas in sufficient quantities without the rules being bent somehow.
