I'm increasingly convinced that the Luma is actually an elaborate hazing ritual disguised as a hotel; they have developed a type of coarse-textured woven-plastic floor material that's physically painful to walk on barefoot, and installed it in their guestrooms of all places

I briefly thought I'd discovered the first ever case where translating 告白 (romantic) as "confession" without further qualification was grudgingly acceptable, but no, this is a *novel*, you have plenty of flexibility to adjust this gag in whatever way is necessary to make it actually work in english!
