Image by twiffcane99. Mira Candor discovers the fate of the slaves he has been looking for, buried in a mass grave on the estate of the owner of the company that bought them. Enraged by the callous treatment of so many people, Mira, a former slave himself, shoots the estate manager in the back, blowing a hole in his spine and letting him fall into the pit, still alive. The estate itself is sprawling, covering a large swathe of an entire continent, so this pit has been filled in a remote part, surrounded by kilometres of forest. It is a beautiful part of the countryside, besmirched by atrocity.
