Every time someone says they “only” use AI for references or composition it always ends up that the product is based off that. So I dunno who folks think they are fooling, like that suddenly makes it ok to use the automated theft machine cuz you added one more step.

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things.

NGL when doing gamedev for BYU some of the most fun and fulfilling projects were character concepts and target pieces. An idea is fresh and new, you've got optimism for what could be with this new project, some of my best stuff came out because of that
despite the big anti-ai ranting yesterday, I will say that the discussion makes me want to practice doing more concept planning in pieces even if it takes a lot longer. I think the idea of spending weeks crafting a work that's super thought out is really intriguing even if its exhausting.

I think they did like 2 posts about this this year and everytime I happen to see them blaming people not getting Surge's details correctly, I just... don't get it. Who cares if her black mark isn't drawn correctly. It's just fan art. They are not paid to draw Surge 1:1 like official media.

With all the respect to one of the official IDW artist regarding "How to draw Surge".
Fan artist do whatever they want. If they don't get a detail correctly it's not the end of the world. If I was them, then I would be happy people would draw a character I co-created, no matter the mistakes.
