It's easy for me to laugh because my team was a laughing stock this year. But we've got huskies and wolverines good this year in basketball. And pistons, wings, tigers were good, and the lions are fun but frustrating.

Of note, as of 2nd edition Psionics were a class in d&d. As I assume the events happened before 1989 maybe the compendium was based on these real life events.
