Old Comrades…
Before ‘veterans’ became a thing.
Active service.
I think it’s remiss of the BBC to have given Trump the opportunity a free swing.

Sometimes we talk of ‘battle eyes’ or the ‘thousand yard stare’ of veterans of conflict. No poet converted that image to words better than Owen who was KIA seven days before the #armistice. What a tragic loss to English letters. #remembrance

Perhaps the only ‘collateral’ damage’ is to animals. The killing of civilians in war goes beyond ‘collateral’. Perhaps crimes against humanity: I mean we must have learned from previous conflicts. Animals are ‘simply’ collateral. That doesn’t make their death less significant. It shifts the adjective

A beautifully woven, moving and disturbing, tapestry of life inside Stalingrad; inside the key factories that continued against all odds to produce war material; of individual lives caught up in the horror. #remembrance

Is having a downer on Society (as opposed to Nature) too easy a cop out? As if it were a zero sum game?

Some little while ago, I had a mood
When what we as ‘Nature’ seemed to me
So sympathetic, ample, sweet, and good
That I preferred it to Society.

Slaughtering animals for meat isn’t a collective need—it’s an individual choice. Let them live.

Going to post one of these every day as a reminder.

For many it’s the month of #remembrance. Imagine all the horses that died in two world wars. They deserve a mention in our catalogue of butchery. We’ve always exploited them. We still do at the races. We don’t deserve them. And they don’t deserve us.

Why is #AI creating virtual actors? Tilly Norwood, ‘comédienne’! Who’s driving this? The article claims the desired effect was the ‘girl-next-door-look’!!! Who thinks this shit up. Trump had his hands all over this San Francisco AI summit. Do these people have daughters? I mean actual ones

I wonder. If you can effortlessly (or even with a sadistic additional flourish) slaughter sentient animals, do you have (moral) limits? I’m no expert on Aristotle but if having a virtue entails having them all what would an absence of virtue permit?
November 5, 2025 at 3:23 PM
There is no moral basis for the extent of suffering humans commit on animals, sentient species. The absurd cultural tales of humanoid extraterrestrial species (Star Trek, Space 1999, countless films) provides for the only moral force at play. It gestures against cannibalism.
