This was what immediately came to mind. Tintin comic albums were very popular in India in my youth.

+1. And back then, application vendors were also keen on making their stuff available to COM automation. Oh, the scripts I wrote...

I can tolerate Windows 11 only after installing Open Shell. The problems don't go away, but become less annoying.

I played with Windows 2.1 first - briefly. Real work was on Windows 3.0 for a while, then 3.1 for a long time.

Windows 95 was a delight. The task bar and the right-click context menu are my all-time UI favorites.

I was there and excited when the Windows Services for UNIX (formerly Interix) was introduced - to replace the POSIX subsystem already in NT. That was twenty years ago, come next month.

Exactly what happened to me. Thanks.

I open BlueSky to write about CMD.EXE, and the first thing I see is this?

CMD.EXE is *fast*. You _can_ hear the C.

I had to reinstall the driver manually, and everything works again. Ancient hardware.

That's for when you need to boot a whole other operating system just to run your application(s), and do not mind the cost of a "fake" hardware layer. A container is just isolated processes running on the host operating system kernel, like running any app with a little extra isolation.
October 23, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Yes, but a `process` does not isolate broader resources (isolates file handles but not a full filesystem, isolates sockets but not network interfaces), and a full-fledged application may use multiple processes, which may as a group need to be isolated from other processes. Ergo, containers.

Funny you should mention that. An update hit today, and all my multi-finger gestures have stopped working.
October 22, 2025 at 3:12 AM
You *can't* ?
October 20, 2025 at 8:15 AM
When I'm sad these days, I play "Kingdom: Two Crowns"
October 19, 2025 at 6:44 AM
Serpent?
October 19, 2025 at 6:41 AM
Or knee guards.
October 6, 2025 at 4:21 PM
Man, now I'm also thinking of Access (someone else also mentioned that), Visio, Project, Publisher, InfoPath, Data Analyzer and Photo Editor not being on that list. Okay, maybe not the last two.
October 2, 2025 at 4:38 PM
Or its descendants, SharePoint Designer and Expression Web?

It was intended to create "compound documents", where a single file could contain multiple Word documents, Excel Spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and any other data created using "ActiveX document" technology.

No one I know actually used it.
