The ever reliable VirtualBox has started giving me trouble since v7.1.0. Networking features which worked very reliably are now flaky, on all three popular OS platforms.

Today is my birthday (turning 29), which is the only time all year that I ask for a repost 🌿
I hope you get lost in fantasy worlds as much as I do 🔮

#Go #VSCode

Here's a search/replace I do, immediately after running the "Implement interface stubs" command in VS Code:

Search: func (\(.*?\)) (.*?)\((.*?)\)(.*?)\{\n(\s*?)panic\("not implemented"\)
Replace: func $1 $2($3)$4{\n$5panic("$2 not implemented")

I find it very useful.

I divide my time between three laptops these days:
* Thinkpad - Core i5, 24GB RAM with Linux Mint
* HP - Core i3, 16GB with Windows 11 Home
* MacBook - M1, 16GB RAM with macOS Sequoia

They are equally snappy for my daily work, involving a 3-node Kubernetes cluster on VMs, plus Docker & VS Code

Thank you @bboreham.bsky.social. Your answer to an old issue helped me troubleshoot Weave Net on a Debian aarch64 VM running on Apple silicon today.

Walking the West Weald on the road between Skingrad and Kvatch, stopped to gaze at the stars and listen to the wind and crickets. Did not feel like doing this in Skyrim. #Oblivion forever.

Here's me on a Sunday morning, installing an out-of-support OS, to check for issues in an out-of-fashion use case of an out-of-mind networking software. Out of love. Ah, open source.

Something I had written (on Facebook) in 2015:

I read about a suggestion for including Android "app" compatibility in the box in Windows, so that the "rich ecosystem of applications" becomes available to Windows users.

Happy trumps healthy for now.

Optimist: The cup is half full.

Pessimist: The cup is half empty.

Optometrist: Perhaps I can be of service to both of you - that's not a cup.

I've been asking various AIs to write short stories in the fantasy genre for me. Without exception, they *all* have a character called Elara. Meta, Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude - all of them. I am now curious about this name.

Any book of fiction in my vicinity will be read forthwith. I do not understand "buying without reading" or "TBR."

The last bastion of classic Visual Basic, VBA, is still nice. The Microsoft Office applications have solid, powerful object models. The combination can be used to create solutions that will work anywhere that Office does. I will give some attention to this "ancient" technology, in the coming months.

In the early 90s, I dropped out of high school and started working in the nascent Indian IT industry. Back in those pre-internet days, books and magazines were the only way to learn stuff. They weren't very easy to obtain. So I lucked out when I managed to get hold of a steady supply of PC Magazine.

10 years ago, on this day, I decided to part ways with .NET. It took me two years to fully do so, during which time I flirted with Python, Kotlin, Ruby, and Javascipt/Node. I was almost settled on the last when I came to Go. And stayed.

Happy slightly belated birthday, Go.

Dear CLI designers: VERB NOUN, please. VERB [Options...] NOUN ideally, but VERB NOUN [Options...] will also do. As long as VERB before NOUN.

1. Find a problem with computer/application/code.
2. Think up brilliant solution.
3. Go to apply it, and find that I already did.
4. Months/years ago.
5. Sometimes find a note: "This shit doesn't work."

Does this happen to anyone else?

Note to myself: Debian 12 on VirtualBox 7 freezes if allocated video memory is < 8MB. For some reason, the freezing starts after you install kubelet, kubeadm and prerequisites.
