In European folklore the wren is a heroic figure who brings fire to the world. All the birds hold a council, and the wren volunteers. But, in the process of flying close to the sun, its feathers are scorched, giving it its brown color and short tail feathers.

In Scottish and broader Celtic folklore, the wren is known as the "king of birds," a symbol of wisdom, and cleverness over strength. This is famously illustrated in a myth where the wren, by hiding on an eagle's back, flies higher than the eagle to claim the title.
