But even then! The EU doesn’t get enough credit for how much of a bulwark its common institutions are against authoritarianism taking root in member states.

European failsafes are a big part of why Polish democracy survived PiS. And same thing if Hungary does manage to throw off Orban next year…

I still think PR and parliamentarism protects Europe in practice to a pretty significant degree.

Like with Wilders in the Netherlands, even if lunatics get to plurality, they’re stuck in the moderate-to-govern or stand-alone-and-crash-out conundrum

I still just think talking about "defects" poisons the well from the start.

No one likes defects. Construction defects are very scary. I worry it triggers loss-aversion mindset big time.

And "condos" = rich people housing or vacation homes in many people's minds.

Arguably sometimes that's even part of challenge — those things are *so* extremely popular that their very invocation can make it hard to pursue good and even pro-environmental policies!
