Norse mythology says the tree saved the life of Thor by rescuing him with its branches from a fast flowing river. Rowan was also the prescribed wood for runes. In British folklore it is a tree that protects against witchcraft and enchantment. Each berry has a 5 pointed star or pentagram opposite its stalk, an ancient protective symbol. Druids reportedly used Rowan to make wands. Today some people tie red threads around Rowan branches to enhance their protective power.
