Fan of the Burlington Route, model railways (railroading!) and dabble with the real thing 9 - 5.

I'm surprised they've gone for something so complicated. I know they can do amazing things with vinyl wraps, but it must be quite fiddly getting all those lines to sit nicely on the various types of stock.

If it were down to the Treasury I guess we'd have something like Penn Central all-black! 🙂

Interesting bullets:

1 - A pleasant surprise.
2 - A Miracle.
3 - A Jolly Good Thing.
4 - Only a short-lived bout of "DRN tennis"!

"Mothballed" 😞

Talking of doors, they are going to be **not white** very quickly!

Not sure it will be on an 08 or 66 as freight operations will stay with the private companies. Network Rail does though have the class 97s (37s), so they may end up under GBR.

"Thus, a production A1A-Bo-Bo unit would not have been out of character; one may speculate perhaps as a high-speed, high-power, six-motor passenger unit with a relatively heavy HEP unit at the rear of the body."

"Nonetheless, it may be noted that this was EMD’s third asymmetric bogie locomotive design, after the LWT-12 Bo-1 prototypes and the FL9 Bo-A1A production units. And it did choose Bo-A1A running gear for its abortive FG9 gas generator locomotive project."

"As a test vehicle for the HTBB bogie, it is unlikely that EMD would have offered an A1A-Bo-Bo locomotive as a production model. Rather, had there been a demand, it would have offered eight-motor Bo-Bo-Bo-Bo designs using a pair of HTBB bogies."

"The leading Co bogie was changed to the A1A form by the removal of the centre traction motor. Evidently a satisfactory weight balance was obtained. It was the only seven-axle vehicle in the group at interest."

"In summary, focussing on its asymmetric bogie layout, the locomotive was an EMD rebuild of an SDP45 Co-Co unit. The rear frame and body were extended by around four feet, and the trailing Co bogie replaced by an HTBB Bo-Bo span bolster unit, using the same centre."

To quote Steve Palmano from the World-Diesel-Loco IO.Group board:

"EMD A1A-Bo-Bo Prototype – Burlington Northern #6599

The final locomotive to be reviewed in this study is the EMD A1A-Bo-Bo prototype of 1984, Burlington Northern #6599."

I imagine it provided useful data for later B+B truck arrangements for places like Brazil?

Just saw your DM (and thanks for the thought) but I’m unable to reply direct!
I think I’ll need to see the layout at an exhibition. Not sure I can make Calne, but I’ll keep an eye out for other shows.
Cheers.

Have you got any more exhibitions lined up? I’d like to see the layout - it looks very nice and takes me straight back to my trips around DR-land in the 90s. 👍

Watching you! 👀 😀

Yes indeed. Seeing a 9-car Azuma cross the bridge was impressive. Hope you all have fun with the layout tomorrow.

Whittlesmarch was nice - there were some cracking small layouts and dioramas. Euxton Jcn looked very good with the wires, but we visited during a lull in operations and didn’t see much running.

I just found the answer to my question - Kreuzweg! The joys of scrolling down my feed in reverse order!

I enjoyed it too. What was your favourite layout? I think Dawlish Warren held my attention the longest, but plenty of others were inspiring to see.
I could have spent a fortune but managed to only spend money on door and drink!

That’s impressive! I’ll be there tomorrow so I’ll be able to see it up close. 👍

I’m still on Mastodon, but I still don’t really “get it”! All those different servers/areas, it’s all a bit weird and I don’t have the time to work it all out. A lot of the people there seem to be computer/network experts, but I’m just a casual user.
