In Phoenix, we see entire civilisations rise and fall, the heat-death of the universe twice-over, but it never feels overbearing or oppressive. It's 2001: A Space Odyssey one page, Abbott and Costello the next, and all with some of the most interesting layouts and designs I've ever seen.

Watched the most recent Phoenix adaptation, Eden17. Phoenix might be the best comic ever written, but most of the adaptations don't really work. When you remove the screwball comedy and crazy panel layouts, the story is just too sad! Eden17 is much the same, but there are at least some good images.

The use of star system characters is pretty sparse, but I like when they appear. Sugino Akio Ham Egg weirdly works.

I'm not sure any anime has looked quite as good to me as the Dezaki Black Jack OVA.
