I appreciate it not for its national mythology, but for the harvest festival it truly is. That's the thankful part. Another year of not starving.

At its core it is just another harvest festival like any other practiced by cultures the world over. It's just been divorced from its proper context with a load of purely mythological accretions added to it in the hope of creating a synthetic national identity.
