2/3 ...claiming that Penguin Random House— the largest US book publisher—is supposedly violating the law by using DEI in its hiring decisions. The Trumpers really are coming after all parts of enlightened and communitarian society. #Shame

Hi #Booksky friends, I read an amazing novel this week, my first by Anne Patchett, her 2011 novel State of Wonder, whose protagonist is a woman pharmacologist; it's set inMinnesota and Brazil in the wilderness where experiments are undertaken for new medicines. I stayed up till 2am finishing it.

I recommend Ken Ackerman's "Dark Horse: The Surprise Election & Political Murder of James A. Garfield." Ackerman used primary sources, like the Congressional Record, so the accounts of speeches on the Senate floor by Roscoe Conkling (NY) and James G. Blaine (Maine) are colorfully rendered.

Nice to find I'm this photo in the roundup on the @talkingpointsmemo.com site, on the upper right side. Didn't realize I'd wandered into a VIP event that night!

...which I had the privilege of editing back in the day. Most striking, Ackerman used many primary sources, such as the Congressional Record, so the accounts of the speeches on the Senate floor, where Roscoe Conkling (NY) and James G. Blaine (Maine) debate vituperatively, are fascinatingly rendered.

Death by Lightning is a compelling dramatization of the sad tale of Garfield's too-brief presidency. In addition to the book Destiny of the Republic—from which the series is adapted—I recommend Ken Ackerman's earlier book Dark Horse: The Surprise Election & Political Murder of James A. Garfield...

I won't link to it, but wanted to put on the record that the @washingtonpost.com has published an editorial screed against NYC's new Mayor-Elect Mamdani that might as well have been written for the NY Post or Daily Caller. 100s of people are commenting critically about it on their site. Here's mine

Books section of the @nytimes.com ran this nice photo of Margaret Atwood w/her husband Graeme Gibson in an article by Alexandra Alter about Atwood's new memoir, but they should've done a better job of research and named the woman on Atwood's right, esteemed editor Nan Talese, MA's then-publisher...
