Do you mean why didn't they supplant paper books entirely, like cell phones did with landlines? Because, as you say, there are pros and cons of each form, whereas a cell phone plugged into a wall charger has basically no drawbacks compared to a landline.

We are losing storytelling literacy. The quality of the story being told is secondary to how it fills out or fits in with cannon, or how it impacts franchise, brand, market share. It's a trap.
