Extreme heat isn't just a medical issue. It's an abolitionist issue.🌿

If you or someone you love is on psych meds: Drink water before you’re thirsty; Avoid direct sun during peak hours; Seek shade, AC, cooling centers, or even just wet towels/fans; Check in on others who might not know they’re at risk; If you’re tapering or coming off meds, do so with care & support; Mutual aid saves lives. Systems don’t. Accessible ways of staying cool: Use wet washcloths or cool packs (frozen veggies from the freezer) on your wrists, neck, groin, behind your knees, and under your arms; Mist your skin with a spray bottle and sit near a fan; Take a sponge bath with lukewarm water while seated or lying down; If drinking water is hard, try: ice chips, fruits like melons or cucumbers, herbal teas, broths, or electrolyte powders in water; Keep your space cooler by blocking sunlight (blackout curtains, aluminum foil, cardboard boxes); Hang a damp sheet in front of a fan; Stay low (since heat rises); Avoid layers and tight clothing

As temps rise, folks on psych meds are at higher risk of heat stroke, dehydration, & medical crises.

The psychiatric carceral state holds our people's healing tools hostage.

We are entitled to all options and pathways that we choose - that we deem to be supportive and helpful and necessary for our own bodies, minds, and spirits.

The state should never be in charge of determining who is autistic or not, who is Mad or not, who "really needs" meds or not. These are the people's tools that have been held hostage by the institution of psychiatry. The psychiatric carceral state holds our people's healing tools hostage. Gatekept and barred behind insurance and instittuional education and licensure and carceral / colonial ideologies and practices meant to disempower us from taking action in our own communities, politically identifying as an oppressed group, and recognizing the root of our distress and suffering. Our struggles have always been interconnected. The skills of discernment and nuance will be critical as we move forward in our liberatory resistance work. We must remember that our individual right to access medication should not bypass our collective solidarity with psychiatric survivors and psychiatrized people who have experienced iatrogenic harm* at the hands of psychiatry and psychiatric medications.

Psychiatric abolition is about MORE options, not less.

It is about THE PEOPLE and our community members (not the state or carceral medical systems) helping to meet each other's needs and maintaining access to all kinds of medications, including psychiatric medications, in an accessible way.
The problem is not inherently the pills - the problem is whose pills the hands are in, the force, the lack of options, the lack of consent, the experimentation, the lies and narrative myths of chemical imbalances that have sought to biologize and pathologize our experiences as Mad and Disabled and neurodivergent people and psych survivors and people experiencing oppression, colonial and imperial violence, and social discrimination. Psychiatric abolition is about MORE options, not less. It is about THE PEOPLE and our community members (not the state or carceral medical systems) helping to meet each other's needs and maintaining access to all kinds of medications, including psychiatric medications, in an accessible way. We are entitled to all options and pathways that we choose - that we deem to be supportive and helpful and necessary four our bodies, minds, and spirits.

Two things can be true at once:

1) The government should never be in control of our access to any meds, including psych meds.

2) Psych meds have damaged & harmed many people in devastating ways.

That is not a conspiracy theory from the government. That is our reality as psychiatric survivors.
