The Portlands Freight Spur is already decommissioned and parted out. There's no foreseeable future where it gets reenlisted for new service as there are already several sizable gaps in the ROW. Also, I don't quite get why anyone would want to go 8km at very low speed to get 2km as the crow flies?

For reference, the Garden City Skyway is about the appropriate height (nope). So let's then say we're contemplating a lift. The Homer Bridge, just south of the Skyway, would fit the bill, but its 130m span across the Welland is a full 100+m short of the Eastern Gap. It's wild how wide the EG is!

It's just not going to happen. Take this small section of Havelock just outside of Toronto. The existing trackbed & route alignment is useless for HSR, so you need to fully rebuild closer to this. There isn't a hope in hell you could do those acquisitions, let alone start laying track in 2-5 years.

If you’re interested specially in his absurd casino buffoonery, this is a good overview:

There's another one up in Bayview Village Park, if you're collecting!

Oh *helllllll* yeah. Love 2 housing!

The MRG are at best misguided, sure, but it's also beyond our homegrown 'talent's' ability to design anything remotely resembling the clean simplicity in my OP.

I mean, TH here consistently just look like this dreck:

It’s a fake upzoning exercise. So “what are we doing”? Nothing but value-increase for the property owners (BV doesn’t own these houses themselves, they’re just DMing on behalf of the six actual owners).

Canadian Northern also secured an easement across a ton of the north western quadrant of the old City. I wonder how far that ever got. Obviously they get swallowed up in the CN grouping of 1919 so it wasn't necessary as it paralleled the Grand Trunk, but fascinating to see it in the 1913 Goads.

It will not. Massing has been worked out with the [stupid] City Hall view corridor in mind. Also, 123 Edward's total trashing of this, and subsequent approval, has kind of defanged this policy from the get go.

That seems like a dream beyond reach when this is considered "generous" in our typical new builds...

There was a great show a couple years ago about this exact thing

*Imagine* a weekend in Muskoka not requiring a car (not to mention the potential social equity that could bring).

They used to say “the trip up is half the fun!” Can’t imagine anyone saying that not wanting to blow their brains out on the 400…

And finally, the glorious Maritimes! I really wish this map showed all the ferries and coastal boats.

Some provincial detail. I’m really sorry Manitoba. I’m not sure how I missed your excellent province!
November 9, 2024 at 3:26 AM
The previous post is a map from the Department of Mines & Technical Surveys of Canada (1951) & covers the entirety of the country. It’s *magnificent* & I’d purchase it if I could get it off of its current owners.
November 9, 2024 at 3:25 AM
BC, the Maritimes, and the vast expanse of Ontario are there too!

I *wish* I had more maps to pore over, but I wouldn’t say I’m not at least ‘aware’ of the unfortunate shifts from rail to road in the 20th century…

It’s extremely depressing:

The 2024 mind cannot comprehend Southern Ontario railways in 1951.

Nope, definitely sitting on slab, not outboard. Just a tricky rendering. Good call!
November 8, 2024 at 8:09 PM
Hmm, good point. Hard to tell from Google. The module seems to sit outboard of the slab, but there's no ticks in the slab-edge for it to anchor to. They're also waterproofing the slab edge which is a clear indicator of WW. Really good looking WW though, far better than what we get around here!
