Reading in another language day 4. I have struggled with the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy series I think because it plays so much on the language and having to re-read because I have missed the pun is no fun. I might try again next year. do jokes around language always struggle or is it me?

Reading another language day 3.
The Terry Pratchett disc world novels are aimed at ages 9 to 99 so again are very readable in a second language.
Anyone else read these not in their first language?

Reading in another language 2.
Perhaps because it was aimed at Young Adults I find the Hunger Games trilogy okay to read in Dutch. Of course it's slower for me than when I read in English, but still fun.

Anyone else have suggestions for good reads not in your First language?

Yes! And as a reader this is what I enjoy! #booksky #sff

Reading in another language. I lived in The Netherlands for a number of years and since coming home have found it helps to read novels. I have a number of different genres but thought start with this as they are fairly straightforward to read!
What non English books do you recommend? #booksky

Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. This was first published in 1992 but I just finished reading it for the first time. Some great ideas and big issues, but I felt it had not aged well, and I did not feel engaged with the characters. Does anyone agree or disagree?

Book challenge learning. I finished the 30 day reading women yesterday, and it was fun! What did I learn from it? Well I had forgotten almost how many good books by women I have. I learnt that people don't really engage - so many thanks to the few who did! But perhaps that's also my fault. #booksky

30 day books by women. Last day. So difficult to choose! Should I go for classics or the authors from my youth? I have decided to go for an author who's SFbooks are new and exciting. Anne Leckie. Translation State is in the same world as the Imperial Radch trilogy. Excellent.

30 day books by women. My day 29. I know I have already included Ursulla K Le Guin twice but she did write a lot of very good books! This one had such an effect on me at the time. The Left Hand of Darkness was my first introduction to gender fluidity - in 1969!

30 day books by women. My day 28. Temi Oh. Do you dream of Terra Two. This is on my TBR pile but it has good reviews and touches on mental health, the cost of ambition, and extreme loneliness. Hopefully not too much teenage angst but will let you know!

30 day books by women. My day 27. Piranese by Susanna Clarke. Speculative fiction that makes you wonder what's going on, a meditation on the good and bad aspects of being human, some see it as a reflection on mental illness, others life during Covid. Thought provoking.

30 days books by women. My day 25. Another young adult often read by adults too. A light read in some ways but some dark themes again, social class, abuse of power, prejudice. Ringing any bells? Trudi Canavan. Magicians Guild.

30 daybooks by women. My day 25. I did not intend to include non fiction but this is so readable and written by a cognitive scientist, Alexandra Horowitz. So we'll researched. If you love dogs this is a fun and informative book.

30 day books by women my day 24. Michelle Paver. Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. Soul Eater is the 3rd book. One of the few authors I have met, a lovely person. More of a children's book as in 9-14 ish but a very engaging tale. Daughter loved it!

30 day books by women. My day 23. Whilst on the Young Adult roll, how about the Firebringer series? Meredith Ann Pierce. OK it's about Unicorns, and coming of age, but it's also about the search for truth and knowledge. #booksky #readingwomen #30daychallenge #Unicorns

The plants are waking up!
Although we have a few winter flowering plants in the garden it is always especially thrilling when the spring flowers start. Wild primroses, snowdrops and the cultivated Irises are starting to add their glory.

30 days books by women. My day 19. How about Virginia Woolf, Mrs Dalloway. Less well known of her books but an interesting way to explore themes of isolation, identity, mental health, time and memory.
