175 years ago today, the Royal Meteorological Society. From the very start, RMetS played a key role in advancing weather and climate science – publishing research that has shaped our understanding of meteorology ever since. www.rmets.org/history

Today marks the 175th Anniversary of the Royal Meteorological Society, founded on 3rd April 1850.
If you were wondering what the weather was like on 3rd April 1850, thanks to the 20th century reanalysis the chart below shows the pressure pattern at 12Z on that day.

The Royal Meteorological Society celebrates its 175th anniversary today. And Carol Kirkwood and BBC Weather is at Hartwell House where the very first meeting took on this day in 1850.

What is the difference between weather and climate. This #dataviz shows the "Central England" average temperature for periods ranging from 1 day (weather) to 30 years (climate). This shows the climate signal emerging. Note the varying y axis that covers the range of the data.

Using up the carbon budget for 1.5°C

A gentle reminder that if we miss the 1.5°C target (and we certainly will), the next target is 1.51°C and not 2°C. We need to keep fighting.

Every tonne of CO₂ emitted makes the job of future CO₂ removal harder, and every 0.01°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.

Now looking at the #Antarctic in September 2024, which is near their annual maximum ice extent, we once again see large areas of low/no sea ice concentration around the Indian Ocean sector and Ross Sea.

You can see the full range of variables here. With the high rainfall in England I thought at first that Neil had made a mistake and some green bars were missing….but of course he hadn’t. Balanced by the dry north.
Here in the UK, September has been slightly cooler than average. It was very wet and dull in England and drier and sunnier in Scotland. Near the middle it got very cool for that time of year.

Extraordinary rainfall distribution in UK in September. Bedfordshire and Oxfordshire saw their wettest month in our 188 year series. But only 25% wetter than average overall despite many areas having 3x average rainfall. More details in Met Office press release www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/new...

This graphic from @insideclimatenews is wrong. It doesn’t show the Greenland Ice Sheet in 500, but in almost 1,000 years instead. See the figure from the original paper below, which you can check out here: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

@bberwyn.bsky.social Any chance to correct this?

So, how do we rescue millions of historical weather observations that are not currently available to science, such as those in this table?

Surely, ML can do this by now... 🧵
