"The real question here isn’t why Heated Rivalry is a hit—it’s why this kind of romance series is so rare in the first place."

The great @gavia.bsky.social returns to Fansplaining with an incisive piece on Heated Rivalry, romance publishing, and the TV industry. Read or listen to an audio version:
The Success of Heated Rivalry Should Not Be a Surprise — Fansplaining
Romancelandia understands why the show is a hit. Why is it so hard for Hollywood to get the message?

This whole business is remarkable in so many ways, not to mention ironic. The University of Utah administration is carrying out the GOP remove diversity from higher ed playbook while also showing off about buying expensive art made by a gay man. The early draft for the sculpture was the word "fuck".

Since quotes are going around from @readingtheend.bsky.social's excellent @reactorsff.bsky.social piece today, here's the full essay I wrote last month on fandom, trad publishing, IP, and navigating it all from a more personal perspective:
"Power doesn’t care about joy. Ultimately, it only cares about value, which means money. Trad publishing loves fanfic right now because it sees dollar signs instead of kudos."

In our new piece, @tessagratton.bsky.social tackles the messy intersections between pro entertainment and fans right now:
The Fan, the Pro, and the Spaces In Between — Fansplaining
Writing for Star Wars challenges me to interrogate fandom power dynamics—and figure out where I fall in a rapidly shifting landscape.

An M.I.T. study found that 95% of companies that had invested in A.I. tools were seeing zero return. It jibes with the emerging idea that generative A.I., “in its current incarnation, simply isn’t all it’s been cracked up to be,” johncassidysays.bsky.social writes.
The A.I.-Profits Drought and the Lessons of History
Like the steam engine, electricity, and computers, generative artificial intelligence could take longer than expected to transform the economy.
