True, although people often do self-destructive things for emotional reasons, like joining an MLM or voting for Trump. Cost-benefit analysis doesn’t matter if what you’re doing feels good. So, to eradicate imperialism we should go after the leaders, not the followers. Remove Putin and the wars ends.

The market analogy implies the Russians bought this, but they weren’t offered a choice, were they. It’s more comparable to an MLM scheme. One fateful initial investment followed by years of self-delusion, hoping to eventually come out on top, even at the cost of hurting your friends and family.

One wonders what goes through his head when he meets a native American. Like, how does his brain account for their existence because somehow it isn’t “this is a person whose ancestors lived here before this land was conquered and colonized by my ancestors in the age of empires.”

Yes, though “us” is necessarily a very loose term when applied to an event that happened so long ago. But I see what you mean, I believe the relevant idiom here involves the return of a certain breed of domesticated fowl to its perch.
