Writing about history when I'm not gardening. #Chicago #HydePark #UglyDogs (iykyk)
OH no! Have you ever tried Yak Trax? They are a bit of a pain because you can't wear them inside but man, they really work on ice.

Just in case someone needs the reminder in #Chicago (arterial routes with signs only)

The brand new house on Woodlawn apparently laid the sidewalk from the street to the door and along the front over some kind of heating/melting magic. There's no salt, and it's perfect, edge to edge.

my annual public service announcement.

Basically, waddle on ice--flat feet, center gravity over the front foot. It's lovely snow at the moment, but I think there will be a lot of unshoveled sidewalks turning to ice because feet are trampling the ice and this is a long duration storm.

If I could edit I'd have added this image I thought would show up from the Newberry page, which is why I said you could alarm family and friends.

From the corner of 55th and Lake Park, half the wall is gone and all the tree growth--including what looked like a fabulous apple tree.

Bye bye stone retaining wall that lasted 100 years. (I think it dates from when the raised tracks were infilled and the viaducts finished in stone).

The real world being utterly surreal. These are DUR photos taken by Mildred Mead, 1957, Uchicago photographic archive. The first is 55th Street. The second is Cable Court.

People with real cameras who went out before it clouded up got spectacular shots, but this is what my phone captured looking north, then east. Then I went walking away from the lights to see if that helped and bumped into a local citizen. We decided to just walk away from each other. lol

BTW, the Halloween Street was beyond mobbed tonight. People were running out of candy by 6:30--and these are people that invest $1500 to $2000 on candy (not to mention all the decorations). It's relentless for four hours or until you run out. Someone asked me what you do when you can't handle it...

I lost an old friend yesterday. The purple beech tree that shaded almost the courtyard of the Hyde Park Shopping Center since 1960 is gone. It was ailing. Purple beeches have long lives but very large trees don't like living in concrete wells. I will miss it.

I'm afraid the original post didn't say who drew this, but it haunts me every Halloween.

There's a lot more disinformation in here than there used to be. Confirmation bias isn't good either.

I'm pretty sure that image is just AI slop so I'm using this one instead to illustrate the "struggle to get a beer."
