JLA Showcase 80-Page Giant (2000) 1

Art by Ariel Olivetti

This is very much an overly silly Plas, but it works here because A. He’s not constantly annoying to the other Leaguers, B. His being able to think of a clever plan on the fly, and C. Most important, Olivetti’s hilariously deranged art.

The artist behind this is a massive dirtbag, he sucks.

Which sucks because this is one of my favorite Plas comics of the JLA era. Writer Todd Dezago perfectly captures Plastic Man AND Woozy, and uses them so well. I love this story a lot.

Genuinely one of my biggest fears when going to a convention is mentioning this account and a creator going “oh yeah I’ve heard of you”.

Me when I reveal she’s actually an evil robot who then blows up, taking her, Irey, and 97% of the Batfamily with her (DC will end me)

I also want to say: Frank Quitely’s design for Offspring is PERFECT. It captures the essence of what makes Plastic Man’s costume unique while not just duplicating it. You can recognize it no matter the form it takes through shaping, segmenting, and coloring, while still looking like a cool costume!

I’d also say the fact that he used to love kids, going out of his way to treat them well, and wanted to be a father himself.

I have a few, like how Plas used to be such a workaholic but did have plans to retire on a farm, the character of Mabel whom he saved the same way he was, the fact he seems to have liked big girls, how he used to be a really competent detective, and that he has a bit of bio-luminescence power

The Kingdom: Offspring (1999)

Art by Frank Quitely

One full year of doing this, wowee :D

I can say a lot about this comic, but to put it simply: I love that it’s about how much Plastic Man loves his son and was there for him. After years of seeing the opposite, of Plas being a POS, this is nice.

Tangent Comics: The Trials Of The Flash (1998)

Art by Paul Pelletier

I can’t get enough of this world. It being an explicit alternate universe really adds to its overall fun and bright nature, even as the stories got dark. I hear the later Tangent outings aren’t as fun, so at least I got this.

Except unfortunately, Gunther came in at the wrong time. Two months prior to TC:SS, Plas appeared in JLA 11, where he had a shiny appearance, and two months after in JLA 15, he was a fluid shapeshifter. Poor Gunther was doing something new right when the main comics were doing something new too!

Fun fact about this comic: the intent with Gunther, to make him different from the O’Brian version of Plastic Man, was that he actually resembled real plastic, and his powers involved fully fluid shapeshifting, as opposed to the old Plas, who was more of a stretching and flexing hero.

Tangent Comics: Secret Six (1997) 1

Art by Tom Grummett

The writer’s unfortunately a loon.

Taking a detour to go through some Elseworlds!
I really like Gunther Ganz a lot. He’s not just ole’ Plas but with a different costume, he’s a whole new dude that fits the 90’s “Waterpark World” of Tangent.

Is there a Tangent Universe omnibus anywhere? It looks like there’s a three-part collection, but it seems really old, given it uses the mid-2000’s DC logo, and online seems really expensive. Is there any modern collection of it?
