I know a retired couple that temporarily downsized to an apartment in Reston while deciding on permanent spot for retirement. It completely changed their views on walkabilty and urbanism. Now they're looking to permanently retire somewhere more dense.

Either increase the cost of driving or decrease the cost of not driving. We've seen e-bike subsidies be quite successful.
