I don’t mind people owning cars. What I do mind is the insistence that they should be allowed to leave them on publicly funded streets, while also demanding an excess of parking lots that consume finite urban space, sterilize our environment, and make cities more hostile to exist in.

There's a housing crisis in many cities.
But cars can park free.
Why not claim public street-space for those who need it?
If you disguise your shelter as a polluting, duly-licensed private vehicle, as artist Michael Rakowitz did...

Good news. Because I have a picture of a street with no cars in it, we don’t need streets for cars.
I know that because of all the helpful people who have told me over the years that because they have a picture of a bike-lane with no bikes in it, we don’t need bike-lanes.
Sounds reasonable, right?

Small business owners are deified in local politics and usually adamantly opposed to city improvements (still, 60 yrs later). Make it make sense 😭
One of the most successful pedestrian streets in the world, the Strøget in Copenhagen, was filled with cars until a 2 year pedestrianization pilot project in 1962. The opposition argued “no cars means no business,” but the street has been a massive retail success, the city’s busiest shopping street.
