Earlier this year, City Council expanded the Avenues network by 283 km. With new citywide policies now in effect following confirmation by the Ontario Land Tribunal in July, Avenues now have clear rules for mid-rise housing, opening more opportunities for homes in walkable communities.

A garden suite is a detached, self-contained living space usually in the rear yard and generally smaller than the main house. Garden suites were allowed to increase housing supply and support different household types under the Expanding Housing Options in Neighbourhoods initiative.

Next week, Toronto’s Planning & Housing Committee will review the City’s findings on the use and impact of garden suites since they were first permitted in 2022.
