Looking at the actual paper, it seems they looked at several models and discuss the caveats - shame the Washington Post doesn’t reflect that.

These statements seem massively self contradictory. There have been five of these in the last 12 years, but they’re saying that with 1.5 degrees of warming (more than today) the annual chance of one is just 2 percent?

Does the game have to provide both the stakes and the comfort? The world is giving us quite enough stakes at the moment. This argument feels to me at least as much about escapism as cosiness - and Tolkien had a very perceptive comment about that.
