my big takeaway here is when you make things to sell you have to do whatever is going to sell the most. and that compromises art. art cant thrive in a focus group environment where only the most popular, safe, and agreed upon things are prioritized. both for sfw and nsfw art too

profit is the antithesis to art. in order to turn a wide profit you need to appeal to the lowest common denominator and compromise your work.

dude I've never seen my thoughts on online art communities (and other art communities like the fur fandom) so thoroughly laid out like this. people often sell their art because they're forced to participate in capitalism, but that's not the point of it. nobody makes set for the hell of it anymore

I don't care as much for the deviantart section (its well written, but not particularly interesting to me), but this part really spoke to me: most artists in the digital space are petit bourgeoisie who see themselves as temporarily embarrassed vivziepops, just one pitch away from making it
