Meta returns to open source AI with Omnilingual ASR models that can transcribe 1,600+ languages natively
Meta recently released a new multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) system supporting 1,600+ languages – dwarfing OpenAI's open source Whisper model, which supports just 99. Does the architecture also allow developers to scale that support to thousands of people? Through a feature called zero-shot in-context learning, users can provide a few paired examples of audio and text in a new language at inference time, enabling the model to write additional utterances in that language without any retraining. In practice, this expands the potential coverage to more than 5,400 languages – almost every spoken language with a known script.

Congratulations to Iuliia Thorbecke (Nigmatulina), who just passed the viva of her PhD on using contextual information to improve automatic speech recognition, for example using radar flight information to better transcribe air traffic communication.

Want to know what training data has been memorized by models like GPT-4?

We propose information-guided probes, a method to uncover memorization evidence in *completely black-box* models,

Information-Guided Identification of Training Data Imprint in (Proprietary) Large Language Models
High-quality training data has proven crucial for developing performant large language models (LLMs). However, commercial LLM providers disclose few, if any, details about the data used for training. ...

These seem like some very common (statistical) sense recommendations for eval. Still the title of the paper is somewhat confusing as if these ideas are new. I would’ve suggested “Bringing a statistical approach…”
