I am constantly in awe of how complicated it is to set up:

- Modern web app with multiple environments driven by git branches
- Auth via some provider
- Good developer experience (e.g., can use the app as it is in prod, but in any environment)
- No exposed secrets, admin login backdoor, etc.

Two extremely interesting areas right now:

1. Hardware and software innovations for inference --> how many orders of magnitude can we drop energy requirements to compute tokens?
2. LLMs for data interpretation --> do what LLMs did for coding, but for data analysis work

I still can’t believe us on the left got football in the national divorce. Absolutely incredible cultural victory

ryan is right. people HATE hearing this. but it is just a matter of simple incentives. if you want a more representative legislature — and if you want a legislature more resistant to corruption — then you need to jack up the salaries. serving as mayor of NYC should net you a cool 500K *at least*
people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

This turned out to not really be true, btw. Using AI-generated data for training is now a very common practice.

But public discourse lags way behind the actual research

Man the last passage of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road hits hard.

A whole book of despair and the horrors of environmental collapse, then we get a paragraph about trout and showing how sophisticated and wonderful the natural world truly is. Hits so much harder than the movie ever could.

I don’t schedule meetings with people across timezones, I architect time across continents.

I'm not a fan of Meta or anything but this headline is very different from the meat of the article. This is from a self-audit of the impact of scams and their measures to prevent them, which is not really a wholly solvable problem!
(Reuters) - Meta internally projected late last year that it would earn about 10% of its overall annual revenue – or $16 billion – from running advertising for scams and banned goods, internal company documents show.

I think Vivek Ramaswamy might be one of the funniest people in politics. Co-founded DOGE only to get booted out right as it got started. Got lambasted at Turning Point for the audacity to not be white. Completely shut out of the current admin’s gang of friends. It’d be tragic if he wasn’t so awful!

The two litmus tests of this era:

- Do you explicitly support the state of Isreal’s actions
- Do you believe trans people should be thrown under the bus

I’m a “healthcare guy” but if you align with the above points then you can go run off a cliff as far as my political support is concerned
every news outlet and journalist who calls trans rights a losing issue should be forcefed soap and their own regrets

I still get stunlocked by JK Rowling. Universally beloved author of a universally beloved book series with an empowering origin story of her own, only to permanently die on the dumbest hill imaginable in 2019 and forever ruin her legacy with her fanbase.

My takeaway from all this AI spending is not that it’s a bubble.

It’s that several people and entities have an amount of wealth that truly boggles the mind, and we’re witnessing them actually deploy it.

And that if we had governments with teeth, some of it could improve outcomes for many people.

The AI-assisted dev world is really sleeping on github next IMO. All for the better, they're off doing research on genuinely beneficial uses of this tech now that others have taken the hype away from them: github.com/githubnext/a...
