What’s better than a cottage pie? It’s a spicy keema cottage pie from Calum Franklin, that’s what?

#NowPlaying Dave Brock and the Agents of Chaos (*). Because sometimes you can't beat a bit of Brocky!

(* there are no actual Agents of Chaos. Only Dave).

Dinner tonight. Fillets of *triglie* (red mullet) on buttered garlic spinach on mashed potato.

Bought too many mullets so the rest will be going into a sandwich for lunch tomorrow.

The Venice Noir award. Created by Amy Thai with Barovier and Toso Arte on Murano. Shortly to be in the possession of @ianrankin1.bsky.social (one does not just put an award like this in hand baggage!)

#NowPlaying PFM, "Jet Lag". There's not a lot of love for this one, generally considered to be post-imperial PFM, but I think this is underrated. I prefer Lanzetti's vocals here to on "Chocolate Kings", Djivas's fretless bass is a thing of wonder and Greg Bloch's violin adds texture. It's a good'un.

Dinner tonight : fresh tagliatelle with pumpkin and walnut. Simple, but very autumnal!

Name a film with a great child actor?

I'll go for "Never take sweets from a stranger" (1960). A tough watch, even today, with a brilliant performance from Janina Faye at its heart.

A fine crisp winter’s day in Venice!

Dinner tonight : fresh tagliatelle with goose liver and sausage. Sage for balance, splash of Red Martini for sweetness. Quite a lot of butter. Maybe not the healthiest, but very good!

Rice, pumpkin, chestnuts, butter and sage. Feels very wintry and just a little bit decadent. Thanks to @rachelaliceroddy.bsky.social .

Claude Rains and Richard Burton - two of the finest voices in cinema - share a birthday. They also both did great work under bandages...

#NowPlaying PFM, "Chocolate Kings". The first PFM album in which the lyrics were first written directly in English instead of being translated from Italian. Strong material, excellent playing ... but I really can't get on with Bernardo Lanzetti's vocals, like an Americanised Gabriel.
