Pittsburgh DSA’s Hot Food Distro is every Second and Fourth Wednesday of the month at Community Forge in Wilkinsburg. From 6-8 PM we serve prepared meals to members of our community in need. All are welcome to come and eat, volunteer or support the effort. Poster for hot food distro appears at the bottom. On the poster, two volunteers in red shirts hand out food and water in front of a red flag with the DSA logo. Brighton Heights Lutheran Church Fridge 3830 California Ave., Pittsburgh, 15212 The free fridge is at the church. Information on hours of operation were not immediately available. Community Free Fridge at Second Harvest Community Thrift Store 624 Clay St., Pittsburgh, Sharpsburg, 15215 This fridge sits outside of the store and nearby a pantry. Donations can also be left at the Laurie Ann West Community Center in O’Hara during business hours. Poppin’ Tags Free Store Fridge 756 Little Deer Creek Valley Rd., Russellton, 15076 This free store provides clothing, home goods and necessities to anyone in need. Food is also available in a fridge inside the store, during store hours. Free Food Fridge at Fishes & Loaves Cooperative Ministries 131 E. Elizabeth St., Pittsburgh, 15207 This fridge is on the front porch of the ministries in Hazlewood. Free Fridge 15106 601 Washington Ave., Carnegie, 15106 This fridge is in front of church Garden City Food Pantry Community Refrigerator 500 Laurel Dr., Monroeville, 15146 Millvale Free Fridge at the Millvale Community Library 213 Grant Ave., Millvale, 15209 This fridge and an affiliated pantry are behind the library. Local food partners drop off goods on Thursdays and Sundays. Penn Hills Library Community Fridge 1037 Stotler Rd., Penn Hills, 15235 This fridge and an associated pantry are inside the library, and are available when the library is open. The fridge is restocked at 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and 11 a.m. on Fridays. The Garden Café Community Fridge 1022 Chestnut St, Pittsburgh, 15212 This fridge is on the back patio of the café in East Allegheny.

This is the same strategy the US and Israel have implemented in the genocidal erasure of Palestinians over the last two years. The US and Israel paved the way for this strategy in 2021 when they held hands as the only two UN general assembly members to vote against codifying food as a human right. It comes as no surprise that an empire that would enforce starvation war tactics abroad (a war crime) would employ the same tools against its own people when it becomes profitable or necessary for the ruling class. The old world is dying, and a new one is being born. As capitalism's inherent exploitation of the natural world and our humanity begin to cannibalize themselves, the contradictions that Marx spoke about are becoming more difficult to ignore. As patriarchy, capitalism, imperialism, and all forms of domination begin to die, they rip off their masks screaming, leaving behind any performance of dignity or compassion they had ever tried to sell the working class. While we collectively brace ourselves through the horrors that have persisted over the last two years in Palestine, let us sharpen our tools for the horrors yet to come, and re-commit to the long and short term solutions to the violent survival scenarios the ruling class is inflicting upon us. In the immediate term, you may already know what that means: stocking and maintaining local food pantries and community refrigerators, building networks of care and resistance, taking control of your food supply by growing and preserving what you can, reallocating abundance from food drives to free meals to grocery hand-outs throughout your neighborhoods. Start small, connect with your neighbors and get to know their needs. Start thinking collectively about the ways you source, prepare and consume the food you eat. Have more community meals, or support your local food distros (Pittsburgh has one of the most robust mutual aid networks in the states!) In the long term, the most important thing that we do is learn to love one another, build together, and help each other imagine a future where everyone is full. Nearly 40% of the food products produced in America end up in a landfill without ever being opened. As long as we uphold an economy that prioritizes wealth over human need, we will watch our neighbors go hungry while landfills choke our neighborhoods and bury communities abroad. As we imagine and start building toward a socialist future, we cannot lose faith in one another or the hope that millions of small actions will force the revolution we need to survive capitalism. We must sustain and invest in ourselves and our neighbors; allowing our hearts to redefine "family" and "community" as we carve out a space for one another in a new world. Think big and dream radically; listen and learn from the folks already doing the work, lift from the bottom to lift everyone up, and devote yourself to one another. May our Palestinian brothers and sisters in resistance inspire us to break through the walls of our own oppression, in the name of justice and liberation for all.
