I was kind of surprised that the story was mostly in place before the script got to Coppola. It was someone's weird take on Dracula they shopped around until Winona Ryder found it and made it happen I guess?

I assume that smarter people than me have written volumes about the way interpretations of this one novel have become their own form of evolving folklore.

I recently/finally finished reading the novel, and until then I had no idea just how much the story alterations in this movie set the popular understanding of the story.

It's especially wild given how badly it was received on release.

...and I mean olde-timey like smoke and mirrors stuff, not just "non-CGI." Dracula was produced using updated versions of techniques they used as far back as the silent era.
