The Toots long barrow on Selsley Common, near Stroud, last week (historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-...). At c. 73 m, it was tricky to capture on my phone camera. Approached it from All Saints Church, Selsley (felt like a vertical climb!). Great views over the Severn. #TombTuesday #Neolithic

Tŷ Mawr Burial Chamber NE of Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, #Anglesey (photo taken in 2010). This is a collapsed #Neolithic dolmen, probably the remains of a simple passage grave. The original OS map is said to show a covering stone cairn roughly 15 m by 10 m. #TombTuesday #DailyMegalith

I posted this earlier and forgot to mention the lichens on this Ring of Brodgar stone (almost obscuring the #Norse#Runes).

Ring of Brodgar graffiti for #StandingStoneSunday (from a visit back in 2012): twig runes and a cross (www.nessofbrodgar.co.uk/the-norse-on...), found in 1906 during an operation to lift a fallen stone. #DailyMegalith #Orkney

As noted by @urbanprehistorian.bsky.social, we seem to like erecting large stones, often arranging them in circles. For #StandingStoneSunday, some 'new stones' in Worcestershire 😉 (@megalithic.bsky.social): Worcester Woods Country Park, Diglis Fields, by Wickes and Pershore College (see Alt text).

Nice photo; mine taken from buses are usually stymied by movement and dirty windows! This font? - Church of St James, Avebury.

For #StandingStoneSunday re. @suegreaney.bsky.social et al.'s paper on the #Neolithic Flagstones enclosure in @antiquityj.bsky.social: two sarsens in the garden of Th. Hardy's house, Max Gate, Dorchester, one mentioned in Sue's Radio 4 Today interview (www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...; c. 28 mins in).

Here's an offering for #TombTuesday from a visit to Orkney some years ago: Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn (Maeshowe-type), a 5,000 year-old #Neolithic tomb, excavated in 1901, where the bones of people and dogs were found. The (totemic?) dogs were about the size of large collies. #DailyMegalith

Unearthed for #StandingStoneSunday: The Old Man of Gugh, Isles of #Scilly, an over 2 m tall granite menhir (Bronze Age?) and the UK's most southerly standing stone (historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-...). Pic is a digital image of a photographic print from a visit in 1983, so a bit blurry! 🤣

Back here on 6th August, the first time in a few years: #WestKennet #LongBarrow (near Avebury). About 100 m long and some 25 m wide at its eastern entrance, it was built c. 3650 BCE, early in the Neolithic. The barrow is on the crest of a hill overlooking #SilburyHill. #TombTuesday

Is #HillfortsWednesday a thing on Bluesky? Here are some bad photos of Uffington Castle (a univallate Early Iron Age hillfort), the White Horse and Dragon Hill, I now appreciate Eric Ravilious' watercolour all the more!
