pretty boring but a good enough metaphor, i guess, for the ways (white) america likes to imagine itself: basically innocent, plodding through history feigning wide-eyed befuddlement at all the terrors unfolding around it, not really realizing that the terrors aren't at all peripheral or incidental.

a very strange movie that tries to track the wrenching upheavals of modernity and all the ways it reorganizes race and social life and economy through a guy who seems to have no particular feelings about anything (except very regular I Love Wife feelings), no neuroses, no prejudice, no rough edges.
