“When politicians attempt to control the conversation by avoiding public forums or calling out their constituents, our response should be clear: we will not accept a democracy that operates in the shadows or through intimidation.”
I wrote a follow-up to my post about Conservative candidate Jeff Kibble and his choice to host a second evening with Jim Shockey instead of attend an all-candidates meeting.

Conservative candidates are systematically skipping public forums. We deserve better.

Conservative no-shows and intimidation tactics are normalizing anti-democratic politics
Conservative candidates are systematically skipping all-candidates meetings across Canada. This signals a shift toward controlled political messaging that threatens democracy.

Conservatives pretending that all-candidate meetings are too divisive but then Americanizing our democratic process through arranging celebrity-centered public discussions and “local hero” candidates, tho.

Perhaps at the next all-candidates meetings we can continue pressing candidates on how they are going to protect all of our community from the toxic masculinity, misogyny and rape culture that stems from the hands of cis men.
Last night at a Cowichan by-election town hall, Charles Borg asked a predictably transphobic question. Borg ran for 2022 municipal council and was a Conservative MP candidate until he resigned.

Borg asked if the candidates support "biological men going into biological females' spaces"...

Being a historian, people ask me if I think the US is living through Germany 1933.

I answer no, analogies are always imperfect but to me it feels more like Russia 1999: a blatant theft of state assets and liberals in a fugue state, refusing to believe the arc of progress is bending against them.

Thank you so much to everyone who attended and contributed to the important conversation about colonialism, white supremacy and the revolutionary action of Assata Shakur.

Stay tuned for more book club dates!

I had the honour of joining CBC's What On Earth with Dr. Chris Russill recently. We talked all about climate conspiracism and how this is playing out in real time as climate disasters become more frequent.

Have a listen!
Friends! Highly recommend this edition of CBC's What On Earth, featuring Prof Chris Russill and the @climateunit.bsky.social's very own @erinblondeau.bsky.social. Excellent insights into how & why climate disasters get hijacked by conspiracies & disinformation.
