I'd love to generate a full city map. I'm told the solution is "something something vector tiles". If you know, please DM me.

100% go Oprah on bus lanes.

Make them dictated bus lanes. The bikes can use them too

I'm more surprised they labelled it illegal. Imagine if they did that for all illegal driveway extensions in their maps.

Yeah, I saw that right after pushing "send". Despite this, I stand by what I said.

That watermain is only 55 years old. Yikes! Ottawa has 813 km of water pipes that are older than this (about 21% of all pipes city wide).

Council decided to defer a few billion dollars in maintenance work in the long term financial plan. I'm afraid this is going to become more common.

Yeah for use. Wouldn't be surprised if many of the purple areas inside the greenbelt are zoned R1 and out of reach for the next generation of families.

Yeah....it's a bit of a head scratcher.

Crazy and crazy to understand 🤪

Injury graph redo. The earliest collision data is from 2013 and the earliest camera installation is 2020, so I trimmed the data at -6 years relative age.

Some additional city wide visualization of collision rates during "the speed camera years". bsky.app/profile/sjam...
I've filtered Ottawa's traffic collision data to show only collisions with injuries for each year, and then added the speed camera locations present in those years.

It looks like speed cameras have made the roads much safer.

Here is a snapshot a sample of the data. I selected the collisions that were within 30 seconds of a camera location. For example, if travelling at 50 kph, you travel 415m in 30s. Only the collisions along the route were selected.

In 2023-2024, the number of cameras tripled (57 total) with many installed near high-collision areas. Even though they are relatively young (we only have 2 years of data) you can see a more pronounced drop in collisions in the yellow (2023) and green (2024) series.

Between 2020-2022, seventeen cameras were installed near school zones (red and blue series). This was a strategic decision to build local support. The modest effect in collision rate is probably because most accidents don't happen in front of schools.
