This is a tragedy -- not just for a growing concern like Bluesky -- but for all the Mississippi users who have found a sense of community or belonging on the site.

In addition to their other flaws, these laws absolutely destroy important resources for people to foster and maintain their communities
bsky.app Bluesky @bsky.app · Aug 22
Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

This is something that absolutely breaks my heart.
I expect to see a lot more social media sites blocking MS in the weeks to come -- we're probably going to have to as well :/

If there are more people out there who are interested in pushing back against these unconstitutional proposals, we would *love* to hear from you!

Partnering with @rahaeli.bsky.social is a joy! And I’d love to have more people like her in our corner! 🥰
If your employer handles any user-generated content at all, get them to contact Netchoice about membership (netchoice.org)! You too can have @paultaske.bsky.social let you yell at courts for 25 pages about why the law they're challenging is fuckshit! I HIGHLY recommend it, it's seriously cathartic

Court OKs Mississippi’s Social Media Age-Verification Law
A Mississippi law that requires social media users to verify their ages can go into effect, the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled.

Once again, @netchoice.bsky.social is asking the Supreme Court to defend free speech as our case proceeds.

The Fifth Circuit issued a one-sentence stay of our (second) preliminary injunction last week.

I feel like my feed is slowly just becoming a “praise and thanks to @rahaeli.bsky.social” space.

But like…she’s amazing, and she’s been instrumental in protecting the First Amendment across the country!

A true free speech hero.

Once again, Mississippi’s access restriction and censorship law is preliminarily enjoined! The district court issued a second injunction today after the case was remanded from CA5 earlier this year.

Indeed. Freedom of speech requires the ability to offend and desecrate the symbols of freedom.

Without that ability, freedom would be illusory.

The State would be empowered to compel allegiance, professions of belief &c.

The First Amendment’s guarantees are not so easily brushed aside.
Texas v Johnson: “We do not consecrate the flag by punishing its desecration, for in doing so we dilute the freedom that this cherished emblem represents.” This is one of the strongest notions of the First Amendment—the idea that symbols of freedom are worth more when allowed to be insulted, burned.
Trump: "People that burn the American flag should go to jail for one year ... we're working with some of your senators."

More good news on the Free Speech Front:

The district court granted our Permanent Injunction in NetChoice v. Yost (Ohio)!

Huge shoutout to @rahaeli.bsky.social for her incredible support on this one! 💙

This is not an April Fools joke: Last night, Judge Brooks (W.D. Ark.) granted @netchoice.bsky.social’s motion for summary judgment.

Arkansas’s age-verification & parental consent law has been declared unconstitutional.

Today @netchoice.bsky.social filed suit against Louisiana's age-verification and parental consent law.

This law violates the First Amendment rights of users to access protected speech and of websites to disseminate speech to minors.

If you need a reason to:

A) love the Fourth Amendment; and
B) fight to limit/eliminate the Third Party Doctrine

This is it.

I’ll be excited to read this article when it’s published! 👀
I was thrilled to present my article in progress at WIPIP 2025! Big thanks to William S. Boyd School of Law for a fantastic event.

My article argues that "machine speech" is a policy shortcut, detracting from substantive discusisons about the protectability of automated speech.

Me explaining Brown v. Entertainment Merchants to non-1A ppl:

CA: ban violent video games because “they turn kids into gangsters & murderers”

SCOTUS: “lol, no. You can’t declare “violent speech” unprotected. That’s not something we do. Do not, pass go, no collect $200.

Litter boxes are one of the biggest impediments to my getting a cat. I don’t think I could handle it. 😂 The litter itself is so gross.

What social media site can I go to that bans all sports talk? Asking for me. 👀
So only four teams haven't created accounts... but it looks like only three teams (@pirates.com @mets.com @royals.com) are active. Would be nice to get the 23 other teams that have accounts to start being active as we get ready for spring training...

I actually didn’t know this was how the process worked. I love learning new things.
This happens every 4-8 years when the major platforms (facebook, instagram, twitter, etc) rotate the accounts and archive the old ones, because they use an older snapshot of the following list to build the following list of the new ones. People think it's a conspiracy every time.
multiple people have now reported to me that they unfollowed POTUS and VP on IG only to find a short while later they were following them again.
