Long time Lib Dem and retired travel agent. That's my Lady friend at the Bois des Moutiers near Dieppe. Only picture I had that was long and thin!
Yes, Polanski's achievement shouldn't be minimised but even his ambition for 40 MPs leaves his agenda not going very far.

Yes true about the tactical voters but many voted tactically FOR Labour as well! As for non-voters well ... they probably break much the same as voters. Fact is - 34% isn't a mandate.

It is certainly not the kids fault that the parents decided to have more children than they could afford.

It is a needlessly cruel, obnoxious and very popular policy.

We didn't elect this parliament. They got a 100+ majority on 34% of the vote. The vast majority of people didn't vote Labour. That's why no-one is there to defend them. Parliamentary Democracy is a good thing if it is democratic.
November 27, 2025 at 11:34 PM
Actually 66% didn't vote Labour

Aren't you spending that money twice? Once on not increasing fares and also on investment? Politicians have a much shorter time horizon than developers.

. . As long as it doesn't freeze investment in the railways as a result.
November 24, 2025 at 10:35 AM
Thereby freezing investment!!!

Most countries that have punitive wealth taxes repeal them.
November 23, 2025 at 9:11 AM
According to the Green manifesto there are 161 billionaires in the UK. At 2% that's £20 million a year or more! Every year. Of course they already pay a lot of tax so when they leave, you lose the revenue you currently get. They leave - or at least their money does!
November 23, 2025 at 9:10 AM
You'll be asking those with exactly £10m in assets for £200,000 a year every year. Those with more, even more. Do you think people will stand still and just pay up? Have you looked at any research into wealth taxes?

We had a joint programme for government which was voted on by us LibDems at a special meeting in Birmingham. I was there. Support was overwhelming. The Tories of course just left it to Cameron and cronies.

Yes I noticed the similarities with Cleggmania. It is a mystery to me what Clegg really did wrong. He said he would coalition with the largest party and did so. Mistakes were made but that is par for the course. IMO It was a better government than any since!

This is rather pathetic

From Google: The total revenue from wealth-based taxes (in Spain) in 2023 was roughly €3.1 billion, i.e. that is the total revenue from wealth taxes not just from billionaires. In fact, there are over a million Spaniards paying wealth taxes. A tax I support! I'm just asking for realistic numbers.
November 4, 2025 at 11:57 PM
I love to research that figure. Are you saying that those Spanish billionaires pay €100 million every year in tax?
November 4, 2025 at 11:43 PM
No, who does?? does HMRC?? mine was a simple guess but on the low side! If I'm wrong the annual tax proposed would be even higher!
November 4, 2025 at 11:25 PM
That's an interesting idea. Please , which countries are you talking about? UK has minimum wage regulations (we can discuss how well they work).
November 4, 2025 at 11:23 PM
When you say it doesn't have to be like this - do you have an example where it has worked? Cuba? China? Finland??
November 4, 2025 at 6:31 PM
Yes, I read this and noticed this: A Wealth Tax of 1% annually on assets above £10 million and of 2% on assets above £1bn. Only a tiny minority of people would pay this tax.
There are 171 Billionaires 2% represents £44m each year for each billionaire. I suspect the money will fly away!!
