Blowing in the wind: A rare example of an anemoscope — an ancient device used to indicate the direction of the wind. It features the names of the winds and their quirky personifications, lips pursed in the act of blowing. #ParcoArcheologicodelCelio #Rome. #StormDarragh #AncientBluesky

According to the museum info, ‘thirteen characters play and speak in a serene and relaxed environment’. On the left is, ‘a child of exaggerated proportions’ with ‘a sort of tripod on wheels’ and just out of shot on the right, they play ball (museum pic).

This vibrantly painted tomb includes images of flowers, fruit and birds. The niches — that would have held the ashes of the deceased — still retain some of the names of those commemorated.

Faded fame: This rather smart lararium (shrine) can be found in the House of the Red Walls, #Pompeii. It once featured paintings of a helmet, greaves, shield & dagger, leading to the theory that this was the house of a retired #gladiator!

Part of a mosaic floor showing a hunting scene presided over by an ‘exceptional charioteer’ (ΕΥΗΝΙΩΝ). The chariot is drawn by two rather handsome and eager-looking panthers.
